A Study on the Resistances of the Psychiatrically Hospitalized Adolescents to defeat Hospital Structure





Abstract
This study was intended to investigate the content of resistances showed by the young psychiatric inpatient in the psychiatric ward. It was then aimed to establish effectively therapeutic alliance to solve against their defensive manneuver toward psychiatric management.
The data was collected by means of direct interview and checklist form. Subjects served for this study consisted of 70 young psychiatric inpatient admitted to the Department of Neurology and psychiatry, Chung Ang University, from May 1, 1982 to April 30, 1983, aged 12 through 24 inclusive. The statistical methods employed were chi-squre test.
The results were as follows.
1) The mean frequency of the resistance¡¯s is 3. 1.
2) The most frequent resistance is `Outright rebelliousness¢¥ (42.9%), and thereafter ¢¥Somatization¢¥ (31.4%), `Leveling¢¥ (17.1%), `Pseudostupidity¢¥ (17.1%) in order.
3) `Outright rebelliousness¢¥ was more prevalent in the group of severely disturbed mental disorder and in the male college student. It was showed frequently after 1 month hospitalization and resolved momentarily with the drug and the mixed therapeutic methods, but relapsed frequently.
4) `Somatization¢¥ was more prevalent in the neurotics and the personality disorders admitted voluntarily. It was initiated frequently at the time of hospitalization, and resolved with the drug and the reassurance technique.
5) `Leveling¢¥ was more prevalent in the high socio-economic group of personality disorders.
Therapist¢¥s attitude toward ¢¥leveling¢¥ resistance is evasive and indifferent nature.
6) ¢¥Over submissiveness¢¥ was more prevalent in the both end of the educational level.
It was showed frequently at the time of hospitalization and not resolved persistently.
7) ¢¥Persistent avoidance¢¥ was more prevalent in the long hospitalized psychotics.
8) Interpretation technique was applied frequently to the resistance¡¯s of ¢¥Intellectual pursuit¢¥ and ¢¥Scapegoatism¢¥.
9) The characteristic resistance¡¯s of female psychiatric inpatients were ¢¥Seductiveness¢¥ and ¢¥Clique formation¢¥. ¢¥Elopement¢¥ was treated by the physical restraint.
